Fed; UMP collapse biggest worry for medical specialists- profess
A medical specialist says the possible collapse of Australia's biggest medical insureris the biggest crisis facing Australia's public hospitals.
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has refused to add to the $35 million lifeline it's alreadyoffered to United Medical Protection.
The company has warned that without extra government help, there will be disruptionsto medical services.
However the government said that in certain circumstances it will discuss with thecompany ways of continuing insurance protection for doctors.
Westmead Hospital staff specialist Associate Professor GRAEME STEWART has told ABCradio itt's the biggest issue threatening care within Australian hospitals.
He says leadership on the issue has to come from the federal government.
